Really, Trestles Again?

Updated: Nov 28, 2023

While the WSL continues to pimp this venue as a "fair playing field", a "great event for surfing" and points out that it's a "high performance" wave, their pitch is getting tired even for the most positive fan. Forrest Gump thinks it sucks. In fact, I can't think of anyone who isn't over Trestles. The CT surfers who can't comment and the dwindling spectators have had enough.

Matt Warshaw summed it up perfectly in his weekly 'Sunday Joint' newsletter after the event saying:

"Trestles for the first year? Okay, why not, make it easy on everybody I guess. Trestles three years in a row? That's basically an insult, a fuck-you to the pros, to the fans, to the game. Finals Day belongs in Indonesia or the South Pacific or maybe Hawaii if you really need to baby out and stay close to home. It does not belong anywhere near Lower Trestles, and keeping it there year after year turns this thing into a low-stakes hostage situation."

Exactly. Matt also does a fine job of arguing for the Finals format that I'll talk about in another post, but for now, do yourself a favor and support his Encyclopedia of Surfing ( It's only $30 a YEAR and you get his weekly newsletter and access to some amazing surf articles, history and endless rabbit holes to explore in the sport we love.

Back to the sponsor has been announced for the 4th Trestles Finals event, and, as of this writing, there is still no WSL CEO to make key decisions.

What's your take? Tell us in the comments. Is there anyone that likes Trestles as a venue for deciding the World Title?
